Why is gearbox oil filtration so important?

If not properly filtered, the gearbox oil will be seriously contaminated and cause machine wear. Replacing gearbox components can be expensive and time-consuming. Downtime and productivity losses for fixed machines should also be considered.

The key of gearbox oil filtration

Many factors need to be considered when filtering gearbox oil.

Viscosity: the viscosity of gear oil is usually much higher than that of other oils. A common misconception is that a stronger / faster pump is needed in order to deal with high viscosity, which is exactly the opposite. When you try to push a thick fluid through a precision filter element, the back pressure can be very high, resulting in poor filtration or damage to the filter equipment.

Temperature: as the temperature increases, the viscosity decreases, making it easier to filter without high pressure difference on the filter elements. As the temperature increases, it is important that the oil additives will be depleted. It is said that for every 18 ° F increase, the life of the oil is halved.

Filter aperture / segment depth: unlike some devices, such as servo valves with very small tolerances and need to remove ultrafine particles, gear oil does not need to be very clean when it is at the low end of the particle micron size. By increasing the pore size of the filter and reducing the amount of media that the fluid must pass through, we can reduce the pressure on the filter and achieve better filtration.

Flow: when using deep filters for renal circulation of the gearbox, our general rule of thumb is that the flow rate through each filter element is 1 GPM or less. This may vary depending on the factors listed above.
